I may have a defective CPU heat sink. I have not been getting normal temps at stock clocks let alone when I attempt an overclock. I have also installed this thin twice. The second time I used a razor to spread the paste on the CPU. If you look at the pictures below it appears than the heat sink is not making proper contact. If you look at the paste on the CPU you can still see the marks from the application which would indicate poor contact. Could I lap this HSF to make it flat or is it just too far out of whack? I was also wondering if it could be the CPU? What do you veteran builders think? For now I may just install the stock HSF.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, Duke, but the thermal paste looks like it might be on a little thick. I might be looking at the picture wrong and I can't guarantee my recipe, but I've been told that an even layer just barely covering the cpu is best: any thicker and the transfer of heat is reduced. So I've always just cleaned the parts, and applied a thin layer of arctic silver 5, which has worked well for me.
If it is not making contact, however, as you say, then I'm not sure what it might be, besides an uneven heatsink or cpu...and I can't say too much as the mounting devices for Intel are different than AMD...so I guess without actually being there to see it the only thing I could say is try a lighter application of paste (though, as I've said, I might just be seeing the picture wrong and I do not profess to be anywhere near an expert). Well, I hope that you figure it out. Oh, also, your idea of using the factory cooler might at least give you an idea of if the connection is proper. Good luck with that...I know this kind of stuff is frustration!!

As I have been goggling around I found a post somewhere that said to put a metal ruler on the HSF to see if light shines through. I did this and it is not flat I think the metal coating has formed a rim around the edge which may be the cause. I think I will see if I can find a good lapping kit and flatten this thing. I also put a post up here. View topic - Is this CPU HSF fixable? - Maximum PC Forums so I will see what the hard core guys over there have to say.
I just wish I would have doen a little more homework before buying this thing.

I didn't look into the CPU cooler as much as I should have I saw that it was rated OK on the Newegg site and went with that.
My impatience got the best of me and I walked over to Autozone (The wife has my truck today) and grabbed some wet/dry abrasive paper. I started at 220 and worked my way up to 2000. It's not a mirror but it's smooth and my temps at idle are about 5 degrees cooler at idle and about 18 degrees cooler at a load. I will throw a quick OC on there and see what happens.
The stuff
Before
1/2 way through the 220.
after the 220. I didn't get any after the other steps.

Good job, Duke. It's a shame you couldn't use Duct Tape in your solution, though. That would have been sweeeeet.[B]"Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. i was reading up on a ton of heat sinks before i bought mine. not a lot but 1-2 of them were talking about how their mobo's were too thin to really hold the fan/sink down tightly on the cpu. One of them talked about he used a very thin washer on the backside of the mobo to help tighten it down. he was saying it was minimal, but enough to make his stuff over heat, so perhaps look into that as well.
and as others have said, i also have heard that when it comes to the compound, less is more.
