Cain, Windows 7 Pro 64 is the choice I'm going with and here's my primary reasons.

It's has increased security as like XP Pro as compared to XP Home.

GPO Management providing a better ability to secure a critical machine.

Better backwards compatibility and the XP VPC mode for those hard headed programs.

Will run 64 bit Virtual Machines when needed and I have come to a point at work that requires me to be able to load 64 bit Virtual machines for testing and troubleshooting. (e.g. Windows 2003 Enterprise 64, 2008 Enterprise 64, RedHat 5.3 64)

Potentially. Depending on the age of the machine you may have driver issues with the vendor has not provided them. I recommend a machine no older than 2 years for Win 7.

Windows 7 Home Premium. 3 license pack $129.

32 or 64 depends on your hardware. If it supports 64 bit, run 64 bit.

I got 8copies of Win7PRO trough MSDNAA and pretty much gave them away, i have only one left for my home server. I think 7Pro is very good OS

I got Win 7 Pro. Came with both 32 and 64 bit. Works great and no problems yet as well.

I built my machine right around the time you restarted the TF2 server.

                              i7 860
                              6GB of DDR3
                              GTX 285 2GB Nvidia Card
Biostar SLI Board (for later when the performance sags, I can just pop another card and be done)
                              2 x 1TB WD SATA drive

When I reloaded Vista Pro 32bit....it kinda ran worse on this machine than my HP 1.8ghz DUO Core. my FPS was only 10 -25 better than what it was previously.

When I loaded Win7 Pro 64 Bit, it not only ran better, but my FPS in gaming went up by nearly 100. I get 200- 299FPS in TF2, with my low being 121 when there is a high body count and lots of grenades, etc.

I suggest Win 7 Pro simply to cover yourself for the extra needs that you dont forcast at this moment, and you hit the nail on the head- when you are spending that much money, and extra 20-50 bucks is just the warranty against needs.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
