Would it make a difference running the scans in "safe boot" mode vs loading up the full windows?
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

starting in safe mode can still be done by hitting F5 @ boot right? i tried it last night but it did not work

        I think it is F8.

Running in safe mode can be advantageous, especially if you are having trouble eradicating whatever is plaguing your system. Also, I think some AV programs have the ability to burn a live CD, allowing you to scan your HDDs without booting to the OS.

Yea, shoulda pointed out the fact that you MUST run this utility in safe mode for best results. The only way to eliminate some TSR (terminate, stay resident) bugs is in safe mode.

Most of them bury a backup in the system restore folder as well, so the good scanner will dig out those pointers and remove the junk that comes back right after a reboot.

well, i was just minutes away from running the MBR.exe. it seems like it does a lot of deep searching. maybe some of you "techies" can give it a look, maybe its something useful for the future.
i will go ahead and try the reboot in safe mode , and try to run the scan again.

now that helped. i ran the mbr, made the fix.bat file that the guy mentioned and things seemed to have cleared up ( also had to run the windows recovery mod and make a new mbr)

i like how the guy is mad that people ran combofix without asking him first lol.

the mbr.exe program still tells me i have malicious code on a sector, and a problem on another sector, but it does not say how to fix them, nor do they show up on any scanner, CA, malware, the microsoft one, none,, so makes me say hmmmm. things are running good, even after reboot, so i wont complain too much, just love to know what, and how to get rid of this "malicious code"

do any of you know what a " PE file " is? apparently i have one, and thats the last thing from keping my computer clean. Other than that, machine #2( this one ) squeeky clean. and just the one bad on machine #2, but at least the HD spinning nonstop is gone.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
