Folding @ home @ Cains lair?

I ran across this in both the EVGA forums and I heard in a Podcast from MaxPC. I guess you download an app and it runs some computations that fold proteins. I have not read up on it yet but it seems pretty cool. Both MaxPC and EVGA have teams that show how much a community has donated and I thought it may be cool to try that here.

Has anyone here done this?

I was a member of Team Crab Cake over on Ars Technica and after 5.5 years I was #14 in points out of 70,000 registered folders. I had contributed 16.5 CPU years in that 5.5 calendar years, and my electric bill must have been sky high as I had at least 7 rigs folding 24/7 in my house.

I was exclusively using the DC client United Devices based out of Oxford University that worked solely on cancer genome interactions. Not to offend any other folders, but SETI and the anthrax DC were a waste of my time. Everyone has lost someone to cancer, so I devoted all of my WU (work units) to that.

When they announced in April 2007 that they had reached the useful end of their project, I felt like I had lost a dear, dear friend. My wife knew I was upset so I told her about it. Kinda weird how you devote so much CPU time to something near and dear to your heart, only to have it pulled out from under you.

That's a great story WT any interest in getting back into it? Also is it a complicated process? Is it something I could set my rig up to do while I'm on the road? I have a lot of idle CPU power laying around the house all week long.

Yes, I've been doing seti@home for years and haven't fired folding@home (rosetta@home) since June.
They have came a long way since I started and the application that manages the projects is called BOINC. It's pretty kewl and you have a lot more flexibility on setting when and how much resources of you computer to use.

Ehh, I guess I'm kinda all DC'ed out at this point. I lost my Mom to cancer in '93, so its something that I will never get over or recover from, but I would only do a similar project for a similar attempt at a cure.
I know a lotta guys from that team that moved on to other projects, but for me personally the work stopped there. I spent a lot on hardware to gain more points per WU, and this was well before you could run the work on your video card as well .. it was all CPU time.

Duke, you caught on that I was getting back into PCs a few months ago. Put it this way, in the past two weeks, I've bought 3 boards, 4 CPUs, 2 cases, 2 DVD/RWs, a card reader and a pair of RAM sticks. Next week, I plan on buying yet another board, a new flat panel and a third case.

Luckily, almost all of this stuff is being put to builds to sell, as I need to build 4 by Christmas with a 5th for my wife for her Xmas gift. Needless to say, every evening is now time to build something, so I don't even have time to play TF2.

Well I guess there are worse reasons to miss out on some TF2.

I will print up some info on this folding stuff to read on my next trip.

I've had World Community Grid and Rosetta@home running on a PC at work here for years.

I ran Folding@Home on my computers for years running under the MaxPC group. Since my last OS install about a year and a half ago I haven't been running it, though.
