Yes, they are necessary. They basically identify any component and how it relates to any other component. The mainboard queries the PCIe slot on what is plugged in, how fast it is clocked, what IRQ it is on. The sound card (or chip) will function in conjunction with the internal bus .. so many operations going to and fro thats its amazing how many calculations are actually performed every second.

also most chipset drivers contain a proper working ACPI driver.
This is the lil bit of software that allows your pc to hibernate, sleep and soft off.
It basicly tells windows how your pc works, generics will work, but with out the chipsets, most onboard equipt wont work.
