Yikes my CPU got to 100

I was tinkering around with my HSF this morning and after reinstalling it I ran some tests and all seemed well. When the temps stabilized at around 70 ish I started working on my other desktop to hunt down a possible;e virus. When i turned around I saw two of the core temps were at 100. I turned off Prime and the temps dropped. My question is how would I know if there is permanent damage?

I don't think you caused any problem for your cpu. There isn't a way to know whether you shortened your cpu lifetime. If it still works, all is well. You didn't mention any of the usual symptoms of a cpu over-heating: crash, lock up, or reboot.

The second question is whether your heat sink is working well enough. For that, reading an overclockers forum would tell you what temps other folks are measuring for that cpu type.

I wouldn't worry about permanent damage. The CPU has internal circuitry that will shut it down if it reaches critical temperature (125 C I think).

There was probably more done to shorten my life the the cpu's. I was quite shocked when i looked over and say 100.

Qicmee I have been having issues with my HSF and I think it's got to go.

Dont worry about it Duke...100 is nothing damageable to the CPU you have if its not constant

I bought the Thermaltake SipnQ. I think it's poor performance has to do with the metal plating they used to make it look shiny. In this thread you can see the steps I went through to get it under control which includes me lapping the bottom of it. Cain's Lair Forums I also think if this thing had a back plate with screws it may have better contact then the lame pins.
