    Strange HDD issues.

I put a storage drive in my rig several weeks ago and I haven't really used it much but I have had some problems with it. Last night I was playing a movie from it and the move froze along with a message from WMP stating that it was having trouble with the source. When I went to look for the file the drive had disappeared I re booted and some HDD utility ran and it showed up again. I continued my movie and it locked up again but this time the HDD was still showing up in windows. I had trouble with this drive disappearing last week but I chalked it up to a loose SATA plug because I had discovered that there was some tension on it so after re routing it the trouble seemed to go away until last night. Any ideas?

Ahh the ol' disappearing HDD. This is usually a sign of it dying Duke, but it could be a dodgy cable. What brand of HDD is it?

Only time I had trouble like that it was a bad cable, replacing it with a new one fixed my issue and I still have the drive today. However as was stated it could be a bad drive too.

Linkage and a DL. I'm all over it. I picked that drive up on Black Friday for $49.00 US and free shipping.

Well I keep getting a cable test error on both of my drives? The SMART status shows up as OK though.

After searching with Google I found a thread where this error may be a fault in the program. The guy who was posting used HDD tune to test his drive. I grabbed that app and ran it. I will paste the SMART information and the results of the test.

Your drive looks fine according to HD Tune, but WD's on tools would do a better test.

                        Try changing the cable.

I will be opening up my box tomorrow to inspect the cables. I remember reading that not all SATA cables are rated the same so maybe that would be the problem but I would find it strange that EVGA would package SATA cables that would not be a s fast as possible.

They are pretty much all the same, but as with anything it can be prone to faults. I simple loose wire or connection in the cable can give intermittent issues.

Also, if the cable was twisted during manufacturing, shipping, storage, etc. incorrectly it can cause breakage of the internal wires. If the breakage isn't major or the entire way through you can suffer intermittent issues as well.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
