    Setting up a file share.

So when i get home I'm planning on grabbing a TB or 2 of storage. I told a couple friends / coworkers here I would make one of the drives available for them to pull files from. Its been a long times since i have set something up and i wanted to make sure i still have a gasp on what is needed.

Can someone verify what is needed to do this? besides the obvious hardware I was thinking i would need to do...

    1) open up a port of my choice on the router(does it matter which?)
    2) enable forwarding on it
    3) setup permissions on a certain drive/folder for read-only access
3b) Cant i just use an ftp client to handle the permissions for this?
    4) Give friends my IP of router. or register with a dynamic DNS service
    5) ????
    6) Profit!

    Anything else or suggestions?

There a few ways to do it. A UNC share isn't going to work over the internet... at least I dont think so.

Best bet would be to setup FTP I guess, default ports (21) and have your router forward that port. You could register with a dynamic IP service (I've used no-ip.com for years and love it, they have a utility you can install to do the DNS update). My www and ftp both work from this here at home.

Once you get it setup and start to profit, you can share your profits with me. Or we can put them in our Bacon Explosion Fund... to fund our meeting at the exact half way point between us twice a year to see who makes the best Bacon Explosion. Everybody wins! We get to travel and eat bacon! Probably have a beer or two as well.

Best halfway point looks like Hawaii. Have a good time guys!

I've heard that Hawaiians really like Spam, maybe more than bacon. Makes no sense to me.

You could use a typical windows share. However I wouldn't do it because the security implications. FTP is prolly the easiest. I believe there are a couple of windows apps that do FTP servers. One off the top of my head is the 3com free software called 3daemon.

Just remember that with FTP your firewall/router has to be able to understand that it's handling FTP. The reason is FTP has two connections. One is on 21 thats the control channel. The other connection is on a port randomly chosen thats above 1024. Thats the data connection

To be honest it's prolly easier to just rent a cohosted machine

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
