    New Toy

So I received a performance award at work (we're government, so no bonuses, just 'performance awards' with a yearly cap on what you can receive) on Thursday for spending the last 3 years overseeing a new zoning tool and Subtitle for the county code approved last Tuesday--if anyone is interested, I can show you all the boring details of the final product, which is probably the largest piece of legislation added to our county code in decades.

Anyway, part of that went to this:

    Newegg.com - ASUS VH242HL-P Black 23.61 Built in Speakers - LCD Monitors

Asus 23.6" widescreen LCD with full height adjust. I'm on a very good Dell 1907FP 4:3 19" now, but the new one looks to be a monster: 3 inches taller, and 8 inches wider. Should be a BIG difference. Anyone else jump up by this degree?

For the rest of the funds, I went nuts on various other things on Amazon, and preordered both Dragon Age: Awakening on Steam and GTA 4 Stories from Liberty City for PS3. Thursday night was a happy night.

I went up about that much a little bit ago, Rand. Took me a little to adjust, but then all my games had new life with the bigger, better picture! Nice.

That looks great Rand. I don't know what you were playing on before but if it's the first time playing on a large screen you will be impressed and ruined for smaller monitors for the rest of your life.

          Enjoy it.

Wow Rand, this is your first widescreen monitor? I'm actually quite shocked by that lol.

Enjoy the extra resolution... because your graphics card won't be lol. Unless of course you have a high end card.

I'm a cheapskate with a sizeable large credit card balance from furniture for my house and my pc several years ago, 2 32" HDTVs, more recent vacations, etc. Juneau, so no previous widescreen for me as the price wasn't warranted. Since I have this as basically free money (until the Feds take their pound of tax flesh in a future pay check), I could go for it now.

I picked up a 4870 1gb last year. Hopefully I'll be ok. I'm on a Core 2 Duo E6600 with 4GB of RAM. Haven't been forced into a full upgrade to quad core yet.

All of my games now are set up for 1280x1024. If I load that in a widescreen, does it sidebar it like watching 4:3 on a widescreen tv?

P.S. oh, I got it with free shipping too, because I actually ordered through Amazon. Newegg just has the accurate photos for this model.

Jumping to 1920x1080 will definitely tax your GPU. I recently went from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080, and my FPS took a serious hit! Everything looks great tho.

I don't have an extreme need to play at full resolution. I'm sure I'll try it until I get sick of frame rate hits, but I'm so used to 1280x1024 that it looks just great to me. I'd be fine with that for machine-crunchers like Crysis.

And that's why i'm staying at 1680x1050. 1080p isn't that much higher but it sure does make you upgrade your GPU more often.

LOL ya i should probably bump mine back down for online gaming. It even causes TF2 to drop down around 60 FPS!

It's here and hooked up. And WOW, this website looks loooonnng now.

Not a single stuck or dead pixel, but I do have one annoying problem: the damn thing is mounted so that it's about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch taller on the right side than on the left, so there's a lean just noticable enough to bother me.

I'm going to hope the mighty power of the human mind discounts it after it gets used to it, sort of like how your eyes adjust to new prescriptions after a little while.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
