But seriously, that would bother the heck out of me too.

I tried the paper solution already. At the thickness of the fold I would need to even it up I'd see it.
I've got basically four solutions:
1. Ship it back as Apache suggests
2. Buy the 3M adjustable easy mount that is <30 on Amazon
3. Shim the base with something a bit less obtrusive than paper (think chip board or a thin, strong wood painted black)
4. Shim the mounting arm where it meets the base (probably with chipboard). I don't have the tools to shave it down--I'm pretty sure a slight uneven mount of the metal hardware in the arm is the cause.
I've got an email out to Asus now, but I don't know if they'll get it because the first try got an error message to try later, and trying later I get some Engrish response about how I already submitted a request. If they're like Dell--where I went to try to get a new mount arm because I LOVED my Dell stand--they won't send me one.
Sending this thing to Asus would likely cost me more in shipping than the entire cost of the 3M from Amazon. I may just go ahead and order that thing. If that one doesn't work, it's an easier return that I won't have to pay for.
All I know is that I have to take care of this. It's more uneven after a night than it was when I first put it on the desk.

P.S. Do you have any idea how hard it is to try to find Google keywords about this specific kind of issue? I still haven't figured out how to get what I need there.
If returning it is a problem then I would go with the wood shim. Living in a 90 year old house has made me a shim master.
My monitor had a cheap mount that caused issues for many people but in one of the reviews a guy said that he had to remount the thing to get it snap into the correct position. So maybe there is a review on the site that could be helpful.
Ordered from Amazon, filled by Buy.com. Newegg had the best photos. I'm going to remount the arm when I get home from this meeting. Came mounted, separate base. I ordered the 3M arm already in case. Was 70% off, easy to stop order or return that one.
