    I'm back with GPU problems

I'm not sure if anyone was aware of my demise, pm me if you want details. But alas I'm back. Still stuck in the desert...(dont ask). But if all goes according to plan I'll be in Bangkok first of April... for #%@#$% good.

Been watching the progress of BFBC2 and have the game waiting on me when I leave here and head east. Seems like its knockin the socks off of MW2. No surprise there, maybe IW will get a clue. Prolly not but oh well.

On a bad news note. Seems a couple of unfortunate events led to my gaming laptop video card to bite the dust. Somebody may know of what I speak.

I usually get all my drivers from Laptop2Go. Never had a bad driver from them. But i broke protocol and went to the Nvidia website and loaded the drivers that they now started providing for laptops.

Now the only reason I did that in the first place was because I was having trouble with the modded .inf file that was needed for the drivers to work on my machine. No biggie. Nvidia to the rescue... fug me.

I read somewhere that Nvidia was having trouble with the latest driver that they provided. Something about fan speed issues. Well, I bypassed the latest one but dropped down to the next one and loaded it instead. That is when all hell entered in.

I really think this driver also had issues with the fan. I usually play WaW over here on a Lan and the game started freezing up early on during gameplay. Progressively got worse, then I couldnt even log on for no video at all on startup. Just a bunch of brown and black vertical lines and nothing beyond that.

Pulled the card, cant really tell if anything is bad, but the gpu does look like it could have been overheated from the coloring. Dunno.

Anyway, just wanted to tell everyone that I was gettin ready for the game and was wondering If CAIN was gonna run one. Could be good.

Sup Cobalt. Long time no see Hope everything all is well.

When did you download the driver? The Nvidia driver in question is 196.75 Its been reported to shut off the fan on the GPU cards to overheat. This driver was released on March 2nd. I think Nvidia pulled the driver the same day if not the next day once report was coming in about the issue. If you downloaded the last current stable driver you shouldn't had any issue. The last current stable driver is 196.21 and I'm running fine with that driver.

It wouldn't matter if you download from Nvidia, Laptop2Go, XFX or other manufacter. It affected all that download the 196.75

Sorry I can't help you much. Can you give us more detail about your laptop like model number and brand. And what type of Nvidia laptop graphic card you have?

I'm not sure if I agree with that statement Caddys. I cant vouch for the desktop drivers but from what I understood the Laptop2Go laptop stuff was from people in the wild. Even had to use a modded .inf file for it to work. I could be wrong , but I havent got a laptop driver from Nvidia ever. Until this last one.

The card I got is a 9800m GTX. Never been OC'd. The driver version was 196.56 or 65 cant remember. But as soon as I loaded it, is when I started having the problem. And it became progressively worse. If I could have figured it out early enough I could have gone to safemode and done away with it. But I didnt diagnose it fast enough. So I'm out of the ballgame until I can get to Bangkok and get another one.

ps: good to see you too.

pss: got BFBC2 just waitin for me to get there.

That was my understanding. Most were done by modders and they even had a disclaimer for Nvidia so they wouldnt get their panties in a wad. If they wanted to remove something they would. But like I said earlier, I could be wrong.

Hope to see you in BC2 in a few weeks. Maybe Cain will have one up by then and I can join you guys. If not I guess I'll have to play on some Thailand or Japanese server like usual.

I am glad to see you back Cobalt.
Did you get the backup files I sent you?
Aren't you supposed to be going home soon?

Yessir. I was supposed to had been there already. But due to some things beyond my control I was needed here a while longer.

Yes, I did get the files but to no avail. I never could play here. So in the end it didnt matter. Hope Cain puts up a BC2 server so I might can join in that way. And I appreciated everything you did for me. Hope I can return the favor some day.

just maybe 2 weks ago, nvidia had released some new drivers. these drivers were "melting" vid cards. after many complaints, they pulled the drivers.

Perhaps you DL'd one of these bad ones.
