    Troubleshooting time!

So I finally got my PSU, and VGA and they are all hooked up. I plug in the monitor, and a keyboard. 1 stick of Ram on first slot. Mobo lights up! I press power and... nothing. I had the lights on in my room and like it does with my other computer, a small shift in the light. You can feel the power sucking like turning on a Vacuum. Thankfully my mobo itself has a power button, so I press it and still nothing. So I guess I can rule out the Case from being dead.

What things might I have to check? Everything not used is not plugged. No HDD is plugged, tried it when it was plugged also, nothing. I'm guessing the PSU is the problem? Because I have one of the fans attached to the PSU directly and it still wont run. All other case fans are attached to the mobo controllers. Any suggestions are welcome. Also, I call newegg for tech troubleshooting incase it won't run?

    Thanks. C ya tomoz.

You have turned the PSU on right? They usually have switch at the back.

Have you connected the PSU to the mobo properly? It should be connected twice.

    Try your old PSU.

All i can think of right now. It's late.

When you say your MB lights up what exactly is lighting up? I'm not sure witch MB you went with but on the EVGA ones there are several LEDs and a code block. The color and codes mean different things that can help you figure out what the problem is.

Ok, I did turn on the PSU. I have connected my PSU to my mobo. However. My PSU did not come with a 8pin connection. It came with 2-4pins. Can those 2-4pins be put instead of an 8-pin? Right now I have one of those 6-pin+2 connectors attached. Which I thought was fine. And damn evga for putting the 8pin connection in a place where a 2 year old's hands won't reach.

I did go with the Evga mobo and the light turns on Blue. I haven't read the manual thoroughly but now I think I have to.

But could it be the 6+2pin connector? Everything is connected properly. The 20pin goes under the 4pin. Clickie sounds heard.

*What's interesting is I'm not the least bit stressed about it not working as I should be. It's amazing. I lose a game in BFBC2 and I sweat. I go and buy a 2 grand computer and feel nothing even though it's not working so far. I do quit most my projects but this one I am determined to finish. Even if it takes me until nVidia releases a VGA card that is better and cheaper than ATi. i.e. NEVER.

A little update as my friend is cursing me out through xfire. Is it true it won't work if I use a PCI-e 6 pin connector+2? Apparently I have to use the 2-4pins? I'll try it out later and post results

            Also, doublepost

Your PSU should have had an 8 pin connector and yes it's in a spot that can be a PITA. I bought an extension for that connector so i could route the cable around the back of my MB.

Now what PSU did you get again. give me a linky

Thanks duke. I guess it was a hint that the 24pin and the 2 4pins were the only 2 directly connected the PSU.

Actually I didn't try yet. I just came back from work. Watching Dexter and then going to sleep. I should do it some time in the afternoon hopefully. Thanks Duke, keeping you posted.

The 6+2 sounds like the PCI-E connection for your Graphics Card. The 2x4pin sounds right. My PSU has just one 8 pin connector. Are the cables labelled in anyway?

Oh and cables only fit in one socket. It's a safety/idiot feature. Just look at the cables and look at the socket. The plugs are square or square rounded.

I just have one question. If this is your first build, then why exactly didn't you actually read the documentation and follow it through step by step?

                            Agreed. They are almost useless.

Many psu's nowadays ship with the 4+4 plug, since older systems used 4 and some newer ones use 8. And the nicer psu's have all there plugs marked

The good news is that usually if you have problems early on you will be better off in the long run
