Windows help please.

Not so long ago I was having issues with the desktop that my wife took over from me. The RAID 5 somehow got corrupted and I had to reinstall windows. I installed Vista business (The upgrade version) and now when I try to activate it it says that I have to install XP first because it's the upgrade version. The thought of doing this makes me cringe so I'm considering buying Windows 7 and starting fresh. My question is can I buy a OEM copy of it along with some memory and get away with it or does M$ have my hardware profile for that machine.

When installing a clean upgrade, it should just ask you to stick a previous version in your optical drive. It will read it and continue to install the upgraded OS.

Well I just installed Vista without entering a code. Now when I enter the code I just get a message that says it is only valid for an upgrade version and there were no options to continue.

I don't believe MS logs anything. Else all those millions of illegal copies used in China/all over the world would be blocked and can't be reinstalled. If you're going to get Win 7 soon, just give me a day to see what I can dig up.

Well if you can get a LEGAL code for me to type in I would be happy to buy it. I am installing Win7 from the OEM disk that I have from the Vascetamator and I will just put off the activation for a day or two.

Nah I didn't try the number I also want to go to Win7 64 bit from Vista 32 and that is also a PITA form what I here so if I can buy an OEM copy while upgrading the RAM and a HDD then I will have what I need for $199.99
