    McAfee DAT 5958 Update Issues

It's affecting 20,000 users at Honeywell and I'm in the middle of it. Good job McAfee, push it out to the corporate clients and home clients as well....

I was in Best Buy once looking at how expensive the prices of Adobe products were when a woman who was looking at Anti-Virus products asked me "Do you know anything about computers?" Me in all my glory said, "why yes I do ma'am" (I paraphrase, I think my answer was "fo shizzle ima a computer nizzle, yo"). Anyways, she asked me which is best, and which I had best experience with. I said get anything but McAfee or Norton. Honestly, those are the 2 that use so many resources and cause more problems than solutions.

The few years that I actually used an Anti-Virus I found Kesparsky (I still have no idea how to spell it) to be top notch. AVG used to do well, but now it's just as useless.

Oh final note, and something a bit on-topic. Many viruses (That I had) used SVhost as a portal to stay hidden. Obviously in this case it was wrong. Just hope next time it doesn't delete System32 for suspicion of a rootkit.

Yeah it hit about 10k workers here at Qualcomm in San Diego too. Over in the UK it affected 90% or Qualcomm employees.

Ickkk .... I feel for you IT guys ... or at least the ones that use McAfu...ee

I love the workaround .. cancel the shutdown with a shutdown /a CMD prompt, then roll back the dat file.

I'm using Kaspersky 2010 but it twice a few years ago FP'd both Explorer.exe and IExplore.exe. Since I've used it, it screwed up a Thunderbird upgrade from 2.x to 3.0. I'd venture a guess that ALL AV vendors have done something stupid over the years.

Eset Nod32 is your best bet these days for high detection rates and low system footprint.

Avira is OK for home use, but most of the affected were business/corporate.

You can't recommend Avira for that, and that's the problem. You need something that is manageable. In that respect, your options are severely limited.

I won't even mention what we use, as its piss poor at doing its job, but it is rather unique in that it uses community based flagging of files.

I would never use McAfee for business/corporate. In fact i'd definitely choose Avira's small business or enterprise solutions over it.

This thread has actually reminded me that i need to update to the new version of Avira even though my version is still being supported.

LOL this reminds me of my grandpa's horrible choice of buying Windows ME+McAfee+Gateway computer. That was truly the most awful machine I've ever had to try and fix.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
