    Reformatting XP machine

So how the heck do you reformat a machine that you cant access a Dos prompt but in safemode. I know you can do it from a USB drive. Maybe some body knows where I can find the files to boot and format from a USB thumbdrive.

You can reformat it using the WIndows install disc.

Well if you're in safe mode windows is active. You cant format a drive that is in use. You cant get to a dos environment unless you boot from a usb or boot cd that has the dos files on it. You need windows to be inactive to format the drive the OS is on.

Yep, all you need to do is boot to the CD, it will say starting install of Windows and then determine that you already HAVE Windows on that boot drive. You can choose to do a repair of the current OS or do a fresh install of the OS over the old one.

You then have the option to format the drive (both quick and full) or leave it as it is. Choose to do a full format and come back when its finished about 1.5-2 hours later to start the actual XP install.

You were right. It had been so long since I loaded an XP disc that I just didnt wait long enough for that portion to show up.

But on the other hand I'm kinda old school and was lookin to run Fdisk to combine a partition I have, then reformat... all from a dos prompt.

Some of you whippersnappers arent familiar with dos. And I just like working from a dos environment sometimes still. Kinda nostalgic.

LOL I remember having to do that... Luckily pretty much all of the OS install discs handle that now.
