    Small Problem.....

OK i tried to play tf2 for the first time in forever today and it caused my screen to say "frequency out of range" so i shutdown the computer and rebooted it, and as soon as windows logs into my name it says "frequency out of range"

so i booted in safe mode+networking and looked and i can see(its what im doing now), and reading on steam forums it sounds like my refresh rate is set to high, when i try to change my refresh rate in control panel>display settings>adv. settings>monitor everything is greyed out.

This is probibly a simple problem I just cant seem to solve. Any and all help is appreciated.

Interesting, it kind of sounds like your monitor is losing tolerance or your video card is losing it's sync signal.

So you work in safe mode which is what 1024x768. Does it say what the refresh rate is.

Since you can't change the settings, how about you see if your monitor has a second video channel. Most monitors now have two video inputs. Some of them are DVI and VGA and some are two VGA ports. If you have a second channel and the appropriate connector (there are DVI>VGA & VGA>DVI adapters) hook it up, change the monitor selector and boot up in normal mode. See if it makes a difference.

I believe the monitor may use the same circuitry for frequencies, but this could at least let you know if it's anything to do with the path on each monitor input.

Once you try this you could also do the same thing if your video card is the type that has two outputs, maybe!

You could also try deleting your video card in safe mode and reboot the machine so it picks it back up and reinstalls it to see if that makes a difference. Or just reinstall the video drivers in safe mode if it'll let you.

If you delete the display driver in safe mode and it asks to remove the driver files, just say no for the first try and see if it helps. That way it will leave the files there so you won't have to reinstall the drivers and Windows will automatically reinstall them when it picks up the video card on reboot.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
