I'm a unix person help me

IS there an easy way in Vista 64 to tell if the system sees a USB hub as 2.0? In linux when the kernel loads I would see something that said it. When I look around in DM I don't see anything that screams USB 2.0 here!!

I think if it says "Enhancned" in DM is is 2.0.

To clarify, are you trying to find out if a usb hub is 2.0 or just a usb port on the board is 2.0 ?

You should be able to tell in the Device Manager if you view devices by connection. In the chipset, you should have 1 or more USB2 (also called Enhanced) controllers with some associated USB1.1 controllers. The EHCI controller will pass control of all 1.1 devices to one of the USB1.1 controllers. If the device shows up behind one of the USB2 controllers, it was detected as a 2.0 device.

Sorry meant port not hub. Heres a SS of DM

Basically I wanna make sure the windows recognizes it as a 2.0 port

Incidentally this is what Linux does at boot to tell you wtf stuff is

[ 2.218068] usb usb2: Product: EHCI Host Controller
          [ 2.218069] usb usb2: Manufacturer: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 ehci_hcd
          [ 2.218070] usb usb2: SerialNumber: 0000:00:1d.0
[ 2.332395] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
          [ 2.467743] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
          [ 2.607874] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=8087, idProduct=0020
          [ 2.607877] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0

Incidentally the reason I'm looking into this is the whole Readyboost thing. Have any of you used it. Seems like a good idea.

Yeah, it looks like it detected it correctly. The Enhanced PCI to USB controller is the USB2 controller. The OpenHCD controller is the associated USB1.1 controller.

How much is in there originally? Because I had 2 gigs on a vista and it did absolutely nothing measurable.

Same here, really didn't notice anything measurable. I've got 4GB system ram and did readyboost for another 2GB. I can't say it offered any improvements.

I suppose it would probably be more of a difference with the less system ram you have. If you only had 1 or 2 GB or ram, then did another 2GB readyboost I suppose you could probably tell a difference.

Isn't it dependent on the OS version? iirc a 32 bit operating system has a limit of 4gb of memory. This includes memory for GPUs. could be you hit the 4gb limit.

I doubled my ram on vista from 2g to 4g(3.5 usable) and noticed a difference right away.

Yeah so I've done a little bit of searching seems most improvement is on systems running 1 GB or less. I have 4GB ram and I'm running Vista 64. So hmmm prolly a waste of time

You added 2 Gigs with readyboost through a flash drive or actual RAM?

And I find it hard to believe that VGA RAM counts for your regular RAM, I never heard of it.

VGA RAM is mapped into memory address space, so it limits the amount of RAM available to a 32bit OS. That is part of the reason that you will only have 3-3.5GB of system RAM available if you have 4GB of RAM installed. If you have a 64bit OS, this is not an issue.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
