Can you make one machine's internet run faster then the others?

When my husband is downloading or the kids on their computer playing AQ/watching youtube/chatting on facebook or the 360 is live, I seem to get stuck w/ the crappiest end of the connection. Is there a way that I can make my machine take precedent's over their machine's?

I know it might sound harsh but when I'm trying to do my school work, nothing is more frustrating then pages not loading because my internet is barley there. Even if one is just watching youtube, mine doesn't want to load.

i do believe in the router settings you can set bandwidth limits as well as "windows of operation" . I have a lynksys, and i know i have those options. i couldnt for the life of me probably get them to work, but i know they are there.

If you can give us the make and model number and the firmware revision I can prolly download the manual and take a look too.

I hate to tell you this but, it's prolly not going to work. Although it's possible. There are two things to note here.

One is called QoS. Which is quality of service. The way this works is your router has a rule set which says... BC2 data gets platinum service and all other traffic gets a lower priority. The problem is your router sets some bits of data into the out going packet that tells other routers to process this packet first. This is used in large corporate networks. Most ISPs prevent their routers from prioritizing packets based on QoS generated by a customers router for obvious reasons. QoS is an industry wide standard

Now the router might have something else. I can't give you a name because it would be named whatever the router manufacturer wanted to call it and in fact they might actually call it QoS even though it's not really QoS. (Confused yet?) Basically this is something proprietary that the router manufacturer designed that prioritizes traffic only on your router. So your router will process BC22 data first over downloads from youtube. Sounds great right.. Well it prolly won't do much.

The problem is most web traffic and most large downloads use TCP. TCP has some bandwidth overhead for error correction. Meaning each side of the connection will send whats called an acknowledgement for each and every bit of data sent. Also TCP has been optimized to efficiently use as much bandwidth as possible.

So in the scenario where your router prioritizes BC2 data and throttles outbound requests for downloads the actual problem is that the other end of the connection (i.e. youtube) is still sending a large amount of data in an efficient way to use as much bandwidth as possible. So your inbound pipe still gets clogged.

There are ways you can mitigate this however I doubt cheaper routers will have this functionality. Like I said get us the make mode and F/W revs and I'll take a look.

I have something on my router that is called "Gamefuel" that is supposed to do this but I have no idea if it works.

If it's a huge headache Mapes, don't worry about it. The kids are going back to school tomorrow and I'll have my days back. The only times I'll have problems is on Fri. when I take my tests and everyone in the house can just get off their systems while I'm doing that

So I took a quick look through the manual and setup guides. I didn't see anything for traffic shaping or QoS (even though QoS prolly won't do anything). Sad to say nope I didn't see anything.

It turns out that those Netgear routers actually run a modified Linux OS. There is software project called Openwrt. Openwrt OpenWrt is an open source project that is setup to unlock a bunch of functionality in the routers. Basically it would replace the Netgear Linux OS. However I wouldn't suggest it unless your a Unix person as it has a super steep learning curve and it is easy to misconfig your router. If thats the only router you have then your screwed and can't lookup docs or get other software to restore the router.

So in answer to your question Nope no traffic shaping on that router.

In my office is my network rack. So the switch is with in easy reach. When hit obnoxious lag I've been know to physically pull cables out of ports. Pisses my wife off. Now adays it's not so much of a prob since we have really good bandwidth

Are you using the wirless part of the router or are you hard wired into the ports.I am hard wired and the other 2 lap tops are using wirless part of the router.

I am hardwired. The only thing that isn't hardwired is my laptop (the reason for the router to begin with).
