Sorry but I don't know what you would call it

So I got on vent this evening and it would log on but I would get this message- unable to activate direct sound for the selected device. I could hear everyone but they couldn't hear me. That was using the plug in on the side of the computer (don't know what they are called).

After not working, I plugged it into the back of the machine and it worked fine

I don't know what information you would need but is what I'm after is what's wrong with the plug ins on the side of my system and how to fix it.

I just use a cheap set of head phones w/ a mic from Wal-Mart.

Did the plug on the front work before?

      Besides Duke's question of
      1. whether the mic worked before (plugged into the side),

      I wondered
      2. Whether this is a USB headset or a headset with two plugs.
      3. Whether plugging the mic into the side works for anything besides Vent.

Yes it worked before. Plugging it into the side was how I always used it before.

It is a headset w/ two plugs. It did work with Skype but I haven't tried it since last night.

          Two plugs, huh ??

I guess we can safely assume you plugged the mic into the mic port and the line out into the line out and not vice versa ???

Ohh if not, it would be a clear PEBKAC !!

What OS are you running? If your in vista I think you can open start>control panel> audio devices (or something like that) right click on it and select test device..

HAHAHA.. Yes, that would be something I would do but unfortunately that wasn't the case last night.

I have Win 7 but I always thought Vista and 7 were almost identical, so I'll try what you said Mapes.

Not sure if this matters or not but the day before, I was trying to get the voice to work in BC. I could hear Tex but he couldn't hear me. I did change the key but last night when it wouldn't work on Vent, I went back and set everything to default.

Here is where you can go to check out you audio devices. I had a similar issue awhile back. I was able to use this window to see if it activated when I plugged it in. In my case I was able to trace it to the cables from the front port to the mother board that had come unplugged.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
