    avt.exe

Somehow my wifes pc picked up a trojan called avt.exe and it has installed a bogus trial version of a virus sweeper that bombards you with phony alerts and prompts you to buy the full version.

It blocks you from msconfig, add/remove programs, running install on removal tools and about any other way of getting at it. !@#$% thing even shuts down notepad!

I'm about to haul the thing down to the geek squad.

After posting last night I noticed the sticky thread for malwarebytes. I started in safe mode, downloaded and ran it and a program called spyware dr. Between the two they got rid of about 90% of the problems.

I had a thing similar to this thing on my computer a while back (i had ave.exe, guessing its the same) malwarebytes doesnt really help, you gotta watch out because the worse thing this does is it opens your computer to other viruses and stuff if you dont buy "their product"

          hope these help

I think I have hit up both those links already but you're right, neither malwarebytes nor the freebie spyware has completely killed it off. My next step may be to back up everything vital and reinstall windows and start from scratch.

Just backing your files up may not be enough, some of these trojans can reside in your memory or in your MBT or in worse case senarios even in your MBR

bypass all of the free bee stuff that doesn't have a firm background to stand on with virus's/trojans/worms, and get involved with SpyBot Search and Destroy First, then get Combofix Second and finally move onto wither AntiVir or Panda-Antivir Third

you can do either the free version of Avira-Antivir or the 30 day trial of Panda Security

              SpyBot
              The home of Spybot-SD!

              Combofix
              Bleeping Computer Downloads: ComboFix Download

              Avira-Antivir
Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

-or- not both 1 or the other

              Panda Security

Malwarebytes seems to work well for me. I usually get strays from zip/rar files from the net. If you have it running before you open the files you can usually kill it without having to restart into safemode.

It oughta be against the law....whoever this company is that's trying to sell you "their product" should be butt-#&%@ by the FTC. I would pay big money to watch.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
