    XP Pro Starts up Slow

Okay, in order to remedy this, I turned off some software so they don't load in the background at start up (though, I was wonder if it's enough)

What's irritating is, the LAST thing that loads is Firefox (my most needed software), after clicking on the icon, it takes forever to load

After everything is loaded up, I'm fine for the rest of the day....just have to be prepared for a long reboot if I ever reboot my system.

And no, I don't have spyware, I run scans daily. I had done a recent defrag.

But, when I'm loaded up and "settled in", then I'm fine, everything runs great, it's the start up that's annoyingly slow.

    Suggestions?

Just sounds like you have too much junk slowing your boot times down to me. And more than likely a system that cannot deal with it. Using an old CPU? RAM? HDD?

      Yeah I think that's it....I have about 2.5 gigs of Ram, a 500Gig HDD,

      AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core

4200+, kind of an older processor yes, but I don't do much gaming anymore, so no need to upgrade

        No gaming?

        What's the world coming to.

I have XP pro as well, and 6 gig or RAM, which only XP sees 3.5 gig. Slow to boot, but it is only a minor annoyance, since everything else runs fine otherwise.

(Except I'm always the last to join on a round in BFBC2.)

I've attempted to put 4 gigs..but turns out it only sees 2.5...so how is your XP Pro seeing more than MY XP Pro? LOL!!

It depends on your gfx card RAM too and that adds to the total.

I'd just reinstall XP. Fresh OS installs should be done every now and then anyway to clean out all the junk.

As Juneau stated, the RAM in a 32 bit XP environment cannot surpass 3.5gb total. Windows may list 4gb (as does my Vista 32 bit OS) but it will subtract the amount of video RAM on your video card from that overall chunk, plus additional RAM to cover I/O devices.

Easy thing to do is type 'msconfig' (minus the quotes) and check 'Selective Startup', then uncheck 'Load Startup items' and reboot. Report back on whether it speeds it up significantly, but still the best bet is a clean OS install. Just back your files up with XP's built-in Files & Settings Transfer wizard.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
