Surge strip, yeah. Like I said though, I'm pretty sure the direct cause of death wasn't the surge and power flicker, since it was DOA when I got home from the in-laws on Christmas Day and took some playing around with to get it to start then. That was the last time I shut the PC off myself. It was already failing, and it just conked out when the system shut off with the flicker.

For most homes yes my rack mount one would be overkill but, I've got like 15K in networking gear in my rack...

From top to bottom in my rack is
Airespace (now Cisco) WLAN Concentrator with three radios ($1500)
Nokia IP VPN 50i (Two of them ones powered off) ($5000)
Cisco Catalyst 3750 switches (Two of them ones powered off) ($6500)
Cisco AS2500 Terminal Server ($100)
Baytech RPC3 ($100)
Airespace remote WLAN radios (3). They get power through the network cable and do A,B or G.($300)
APCC Smart Ups 1400RMXLTNET ($1500)
Also on the UPS
Comcast Cable modem
My Linux Server I built a year ago. So all totaled up it's closer to 16K. Although those prices are for brand spanking new equipment...
