    DVD burner issues...

I have a pioneer DVR 110D DVD writer in my rig. I am trying to pull about 35 GB worth of material off an old HDD so i can format and re use.

I have 2 types of DVD, DVD-R and DVD+RW. Neither of these seem recognized by drive.
With no disc in drive, going to my computer shows DVD-RW drive" labeled D"
If i put one of these dvd's into it, it changes to CD drive" still D "

I am unable to write on either DVD disc,, any clues as to what is up here? I have updated the firmware for device, and its driver. Id like to burn onto 17-18 dvd's as opposed to 40 some CD's.

Running fresh install of XP home SP3. The drive reads and plays dvd's , just wont burn them.

Can it read retail discs? Can it read other dvdr/rw's you have?

yes, it can read retail dvd's. Ive never burned a DVD before, so i dont have any man made ones laying around to dbl check.
Windows should be able to burn a DVD without me needing to go buy something extra right?

Depends on your version of windows, but generally speaking, yes. For instance on win 7 64 bit here. I pop in a blank dvd and it will prompt me if i want to format it so i can write to it like a hard disk.

Try using ImgBurn The Official ImgBurn Website

It also has a few nice troubleshooting features, like checking/removing bad filters without having to mess with the registry.

If you choose to install, pay attention during install setup. Make sure the box is unchecked for "Uniblue Desktop Shortcuts" though it should be by default. It will also offer to install the "Ask toolbar" .... clear the checkboxes

Sometimes you need to update the firmware on the drive itself. Be careful though you can brick it sometimes

I'm not sure if XP has native burning capability.

i get a prompt asking me what to do with the blank when i put it in. It just doesnt show up as a DVD, it treats it like a CD, whether its a DVD-r or DVD+RW.

                  Ill look into the program

this turned out to be a software issue? i installed a nero dvd burning software thing that came on an older burner i had. everything worked out.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
