    win 7 home upgrade

are the upgrade discs passable? i like to run 2 PC's on my desk, and i need to update at least 1 of them to win 7 so i can play BF3 when it comes out.

Newegg has a 3 machine win 7 upgrade package for only 139.99. id gladly pay an extra 40$ for 2 more codes. It also comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions.

any reasons why i shouldnt be all over this?

I guess it's a good deal if you have three PCs to upgrade, if not you could sell one to someone else who needs to upgrade. I'm not sure what oyu mean by passable.

well, i mean no major known issues with using upgrade as opposed to full edition?

and i need 2 codes, so even if i dont use the 3rd one, it still comes out cheaper then buying to separate discs @ 99 each.

The only issue with the upgrade versions is that you are supposed to install the old OS before installing the upgrade version, this becomes an issue if you have to reinstall down the road but there is a workaround for that that I used when i upgraded the wife's machine.

I would read up a bit on it and here is a great place to start. Maximum PC | Windows 7 Upgrade Guide: All Your Questions Answered

If you are installing on a current system with an older OS, upgrade should work great. If you are installing on a new system, you should be OK as long as you have the install disc for an older Windows OS.

its been so long since i did it, i dont remember running into any issues or not( my old xp upgrade disc) i had a full copy, and an upgrade. during my latest formatting debacle. i just used the full disc, and codes from full and upgrade on my 2 PC's

I think i am gonna pick these up if they are still around. since there arent any real deal breakers( needing to install old OS wont be fun, but oh well) i can not argue with the price vs 3 codes.

You do not need to install the old OS. During the Win 7 Upgrade Install it will ask you to insert the XP disc to prove you have it.

Upgrade you have to have proof of a previous version. When install an upgrade version at one point it will ask you for your old os disk.

the upgrade updates your current version to whatever the update is. in this case, win7. i do beleive it keeps your files etc in place. i plan on backing everything up, and doing fresh formatted installs, but i think keeping all your files in place in the reason they sell em.

i do have XP and the disc but why would the upgrade cost me more than buying a full version? shouldn't be opposite.

its now out of stock, but this upgrades my two desktops. at roughly 99.99 per code if you buy the full version, this is an alright deal.

One issue I ran into was if your are uprgrading to a 64 bit version, it requires a lot of work around to install from a 32 bit version. Can be done just have to mess around with getting boot order exe from the 32 bit so can boot to the 64 bit on a new machine. This was done using a downloaded version rather than a cd version, would imagine no problems if using the cd. Not clear whether would give same hiccups if going from 32 to 64 on cd.

If you go to 64 on DVD, you have to boot to the DVD and do the upgrade (or you can do a full install and completely overwrite the old OS).

Ruthless, OEM copies are cheaper than the full version. They are usually tied to the HW they are initially installed on, although you can sometimes get around this. A full reinstall is usually cleaner, but you have to reinstall your apps, etc. If you built your system recently, doing an upgrade should be fairly painless, though.

That's funny, I did the upgrade on one of mine and I don't remember it asking for the previous OS disk for verification. I was expecting it too and had the DVD ready to go.
