I ran into a fellow pilot the other day who is a fan of BF2 and and wants me to build a rig with a budget of under $2000.00. I through this list together and would like to hear your input. I bet I could save a bit on the video card and the HDD so I'm particularity interested in those parts. It's $1715.00 which gives him room for a monitor.

2 of these in a raid set up? 64mb cache... comes out cheaper than 1 of the drives you got( savings )

the vid card is a monster. no single card will be faster(well, unless you spend 750+ on a 590), but, if 500$ is the budget, there are some cards that can be crossfired to just edge past that one. i like the MSI twin frozr models. the cooler allows them OC the living hell out of the cards, often with more room to go. check some of their marks vs. other OC'd cards.

If he has the cash, I would go with 1 250GB SATA6 SSD and a 2GB storage drive.

I have sent the original list to him and a list with the video card and the HDD replaced. I want to avoid having things like a RAID setup or heavy overclocking as part of the deal as he isn't into that kind of stuff.

$1287.91 is the new list, I think keeping the 580 and the cheaper HDD will be what we come up with. Any thoughts?

These days, 500GB isn't really enough for a HDD, especially if he plans to get a lot of games from Steam. Go with at least 1TB, 7200RPM. Probably a WD Caviar Black.

But, the 560 is a solid choice for video card. Not quite as fast as the 580, but will perform just fine on anything out today.

I find a 300 GB raptor works pretty well for Steam games. Its faster then a 7500rpm drive. That extra response time can be very nice on I/O intensive games.

agreed. i only have 1 250GB drive on my computer, and only about 25% of my steam games installed, nothing else. already at about 150. you can get decent priced 500GB drives , but for only like 20$ more, you can get the 1TB counterpart.
