Using the OS (XP) when changing out motherboards

I plan on using my old hard drive with my OS and files on it with a new system upgrade...a Motherboard that's slightly used, but a bit newer.

The last time I did this, someone told me I would probably would have to do a FULL Formate re-install because the OS would not recognize the new Mboard.

But I read on MS's site that you just put in the XP Pro installation disk, and run select "Repair" or something when choosing the direction you need to go.

That formatting is more thrownig the baby out with the bathwater technique.

Why you sticking with XP? If you are putting in a new mobo and CPU I would just install Windows 7.

Also, how old is this installation? If it is more than a year or two old, it wouldn't hurt to do a fresh install anyway to get rid of the extra crap that builds on your system over the years.

To your question: I have had luck in the past just connecting a WIndows XP drive to a new system and installing the new drivers after booting. You could try that.

Buy a new HD and an OEM copy of Win 7. Use the current HD for storage, and you can still get your files off it it.

Repair install will be fine for you, or you can also go into the Device Mangler and change the ATA controller from what it is currently set at to 'Generic STA controller'.

I assume you are going from either AMD to AMD or Intel to Intel ??

We never had any BSD crashes before Windows!

(Didn't have much use for a mouse either.)

Yeah, last time I changed out Motherboards, upon boot up it would Blue Screen on me. Someone told me to do a format reinstall, and I had to find a SATA driver and put it on a floppy disk upon installation.

Apparently, if you have a NON-IDE HDD, but a SATA HDD, you would have to do that,

Then I found out you can just do a "repair" install instead.

Yep and 4 megs was about the max you could install. I remember when I got my first single speed CD Drive.

Just keep in mind that Microsoft no longer supports XP, which means no more security updates. This is a big reason why you should just consider going to Win 7.

XP support was extended. Microsoft had to backtrack on their original announcements due to market pressure.

Here's the latest, "Even though we ended the sale of Windows XP on October 22, 2010, we still plan to provide support for individual users and businesses until April 2014."
