    Hot mic in Vista

Foe some reason I have noticed lately that my mic is always hot. I hear myself talking whenever the computer is on. It wasn't always like this and it's quite annoying. I have looked for a setting to mute the mic but I cant seem to find it anywhere. Any ideas?

hot? as in warm to the touch? or always on? as far as the settings. you have to use the advanced function, but they won't work un;ess you manually turn it back on later.

Hot as is always on. The problem is that when I am talking I get an echo which is a huge PITA.

I think it is a thing with Vista. Mine is always on as well, but it doesn't really cause any problems for me. In games and Vent, the mic still works normally (only when the right key is pressed).

What kind of soundcard or onboard sound do you have? Is it a microphone and speakers, or are we talking about a headset? Is it an analog headset or a USB one? What kind of sound controls are you using on your computer, the standard ones or something that can special with a soundcard? Little bit more info would help some

My mic actually is "Hot" all the time also, and I use XP Pro.

Went to headphones/mic, and a LOT happier there.

odd. i have vista, and my mic is only on when i tell it to.i'll have to look into it more. you have the xfi card don't you?

mine isn't installed yet(i know! blasfamy!), so that might be why i never hear mine.

I think it has always been this way but I was trying to increase my mic output so I put boost on. This made the noise more noticeable so I just unchecked the Mic Boost and now it's tolerable. In XP I was able to mute the mic and it would still work in the games. Vista Shmista I am leaning to not reinstalling Vista when I get my new motherboard it's just one PITA after another.

@ Trooper I am using a Xfi Extreme Gamer sound card. I looked through the audio control software and I did not See an option that would fix this.

                    I FIGURED IT OUT!

to remove the feed back follow this:

                    go to "Control Panel"

go to "Sound"(not one of the underlying options)

Start by clicking the "recording" tab

make your microphone "set as default"

                    press "ok"

                    go to the "playback" tab

                    right click the "speakers" icon

                    click "properties"

                    go to "Levels" tab

                    scroll down to "microphone"

click the speaker like looking icon next to it so it has the red slashed circle.

                    click "ok"

                    and viola!

it irked me GREATLY when my default installation of my sound card last night produced the same results. and vista way of saying "currently" unavailable REALLY threw me off until i monkey'ed with it. BA can attest, i kept asking "can you hear me now?" to the point of being annoying. lol.
