I guess the SSD on the board is used for the HDD caching that we were discussing earlier. I wonder if this connection is a quicker connection then the other SATA connections.

Ughh, Gigabyte needs to rethink their naming strategy. Its been that way from the start, so I assume they aren't going to change, but Z68XP-UD3-iSSD is a freakin' mouth full !

Anyhoo, very interesting concept, and something I'd expect out of Asrock, not Gigabyte.

It is probably connected to a SATA6 controller.

Some GIGABYTE Z68 Motherboards Now Have mSATA Connectivity

Above we have partial shots of two motherboards, one which shows an empty mSATA slot (left) and another that has the mSATA slot populated with a mSATA drive (right). If these slots look familiar to you, the mSATA connection is physically the same as mini PCIe slots found inside many laptops. A couple of months ago the folks over at Hot Hardware reviewed Intel?s 310 Series mSATA SSD?s, which come in both 40GB and 80GB flavours. The latest generation?Larson Creek? 311 SSD?s were recently released.
