All this BF3 talk and upgrades...

Has me worried my 3 year old system won't cut it

I've been soooo out of the game with video cards, where they are at, what's what, what's good,...

I currently have an nVidia 9600 GT. It wasn't top of the line when I bought it...so I'm thinking BF3 might stink.

I'm running BC2 totally fine. I'm also not a graphics snob, I can tone it down for it to be playable, but still don't want it to look like mush.

4GB ram
Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 ghz

Please don't tell me I have to skip buying a new lens to upgrade my PC

You're running a close spec to me Twinky apart from GFX. I'm running,

C2D e6750 @ 3.6Ghz
GTX460
4GB RAM

I'm currently running the alpha on either low or med. I haven't really decided if either has any benefits over another yet, hence why i keep changing.

The game runs ok for me, and is actually better than BC2. Somewhere close to BC2 Vietnam.

IMO you need to buy a new GFX card. The 9600GT just isn't going to cut it i'm afraid.

Your CPU, like mine isn't ideal. Frostbite loves a quadcore. A sad, but true fact (even if there isn't really anything to show for all this CPU usage). You should be ok if you can overclock it some. Try and get it to 3.2Ghz minimum. 3.5Ghz+ is ideal.

I wouldn't upgrade just yet though, wait until you try the open beta.

Act now and ask for forgiveness later. Think about it that way and upgrade your rig now. Deal with whatever happens later.

9600GT ... ouch !! You held out a lot longer than the average bloke (using Juneau-speak here) !!

I'm very interested to see the difference between dual and quad core on BF3, and I know when I went quad 3 years ago, a lot of guys were still pushing the dual CPUs as all you'd need. I think a quad will play BF3, I can't say a dual will play it as well. Tough decision for you, but if BF3 is OK with a dual CPU, then by all means pick up an Nv 460 or similar and have at it.

@Juneau... lol... I already own that Canon lens haha. Not the hood though, paid $6 for an ebay knock off that works just as fine

@Badhabitz... finances are already squared away. While it's not official, at least it's a mutual and respectful seperation, so we know where we both stand financially. I did get the short end of the money from selling the house, but them are the ropes.

@WT... I wasn't gaming much in the last few years, other than some TF2 and CS:S... so the card and dual core was more than enough. But I'm back, at least for now. Man, technology just goes by leaps and bounds.

make sure you put a note on it stating its "gift", if its a package.. he'll get charged $25. i ship stuff to friends all the time in CAN.. before i learned my lesson.

That's an awesome offer Duke!! Thanks!! I might just hit you up on it, or I might just be lazy and get one built at my local university computer store. I'm way past university age, but the guys are cool to build stuff up for random people

Quad will obviosuly play it better, but dual core in my experience really does hang in there. On med settings the the lowest i've seen my fps drop to is 31. I wish i did have a quad anyway, but circumstance, ie health, has decided otherwise.

My resolution is also the same as Twinkys. 1680x1050.

I still think he should wait until the beta so he can see for himself.
