I read somewhere that with my MB it overclocks better if only two RAM slots are occupied. I have all 4 occupied.

This was a problem with EVGA boards as well, pull two sticks and see what happens. I would still try the voltage change first.

Here is another thread I found that is specific to your motherboard:

Heat is a factor of overclocking, but everyone knows that. It's why so many people buy aftermarket coolers.

Parts breaking? Very unlikely. I'd put it down to chance. Either that or they're going for some really agressive overclock and upping volts to unsafe levels.

in general all motherboards are more stable/OC better with fewer memory slots occupied.

I will go out on an overclocker limb here and say that chip should overclock very well. I had an e6600 (2.66ghz) chip in a stout rig (at the time) that I sold to Holy-Hand-Grenade a few years back and it was humming along at 3.66ghz with no issues whatsoever.

That's a full 1ghz OC, with the Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro 7 HSF keeping the chip nice and cool. This was at default voltages, so I either had a 'golden' chip or they are just that good.

To be honest, if it was my rig I would overclock it to 3.5 just to be on the safe side, but I'd also think about pulling it in a year at most and replacing it with a Kenstfield Q6600 2.66 chip, and overclocking that quad core to 3.66ghz. Dual core is just so end of the road, especially when you are playing BF3.

You should get at least another 200Mhz out of that chip depending on your motherboard. I currently have my e6750 at 3.5Ghz.

I have a Intel E8500 Dual Core, 3.16GHz that I'm going to overclock in my Dell XPS 680i.

I have an nVidia motherboard and I'll get the specs on the RAM when I get home.

Anyone overclocked one of these before?

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
