    Juneau get Calibre. http://calibre-ebook.com/
It is a free program and allows you to edit your ebooks. You can convert from one format to another. This allows you to buy books in other formats and does not limit where you can buy your books. Except you are limited but sellers to what is allowed in your country. For example I would love to buy Alistair MacLean's Breakheart Pass as an ebook. It is not available in North America. So much for a Global Economy.
Another thing I like about Calibre is you can use it to strip DRM from your purchases. I believe that I can use my purchased ebooks just as I use my purchased pbooks. I automatically strip the DRM from all of my purchases.
Calibre also has library management and it will sync with your ereader.

    Thank you very muchly.

I have a 4 year old Sony eReader. It works like an iPod in that you sync books from your PC to the reader. I can't get books over the air, but that's not a big deal. Before I go on a trip I just make sure that I've bought all the books that I want to read.

Can someone link me to a nice review/explanation of all the different brands and models of readers or whatever these ebook things are called? Was thinking of getting one for my dad, and I thought the kindle was the only one, now I read this thread and get blown away.

            I don't mean to hi-jack but I have a question as well.

Are these things user friendly? I mean for someone who is not computer literate and a slow learner, are they fairly easy to get used to? I was going to get my mom one for her birthday and then I got worried it was to complicated and if it was, she would get frustrated and not use it. I know she would love one but she has very little patience and she's slow at learning anything electronic.

              Sounds like my wife.
Seriously, my wife is computer declined to misquote Gary Larson.
She the Nook Color and loves it. It is a touch screen and is very intuitive. All of your books on one device and all are always available. The Nook Color can change the font style and size to make reading easier. You can read in the dark. It comes with a web browser and wifi. You can subscribe to Magazines and Newspapers. It has apps and you can buy books through the device as long as you have wifi. Or you can order books and download to your computer then upload to the Nook. There are lots of free books available to download and read.

I noticed that the new Kindle says it has multi-touch. Does the new Nook?

My wife has a Kindle and a Nook and loves them both, you can't go wrong with either one if your dad will only be reading with it.

Well, he doesnt have a computer or regular access, and from what I gathered from all of the posts here, is that some have access to networks, wifi or 3g, and some dont.
                      Newer models of both do?
Thanks for all the info everyone, the nook color seems like it might be good for him, he is easily frustrated, like lady's mom.

The Nook Color only has Wifi. Most ebooks with 3G are more expensive but do allow you to download books without a network connection.
The cheaper Kindles have advertising and you are only saving $20.00.

This is why I now own a Toshiba Thrive to complement my Kindle. I got sick of spending 6-8 hours a day constantly checking in with the Slickdeals forum on availability rumors for the Touchpad and leaping into whatever site may have had it for 20 seconds.
