Backing up a laptop....

Hey guys my gaming laptop has a problem with the DC power connector, because its loose and the battery wont even begin to charge.

Before I replace this I was wondering if it was possible to back it up to my desktop through the SATA port on the back of my laptop? And if so how would I go about doing that (articles or videos would help if its complicated).

I understand that there should be no loss data in doing this but for the rare chance I break something while replacing the DC connector I would like to back up the important things like work and photo's.

if you have an external hard drive you could connect it to your laptop and copy all the valuable files there... via USB

Most likely it has an esata port on the back of the laptop not a sata.

The easiest thing to do would be to remove the laptop harddrive and plug it into your desktop system and do the transfer.

Or use an external harddrive with esata or usb to transfer the files/clone the drive.

Remove the hard drive sounds like my option, and yeah its an esata now that i look at it. I cant even turn on the computer the DC connector is so busted i cant charge my laptop to make it run

ESATA and SATA are basically the same thing. ESATA is just external.

Awhile ago when I had to do something similar, I needed a different connector for the laptop drive (vs. desktop). Are the SATA & power connectors the same for both laptop & desktop drives?

If you have a USB external HDD, just use that. Copy your documents, music, pictures, and anything else you need to save. Simple. If you really want to get simple, use the built-in "Backup and Restore" functionality in Windows 7.

i cant turn the laptop on is the problem the battery ran dead while i was at school and because the DC connector is busted i cannot get it to charge

The external connector is different. If you open the case though it plugs into what looks like a SATA port if it's not directly on the MB

Donziboy2's advice still looks good. Have you been able to remove the hard drive and connect it to a working PC yet?

Instead of a spare PC, I've used one of these $18 SATA-to-USB connectors when I wanted to transfer files from a drive via USB. Very portable, but data flows at USB 2.0 speed.

Oops sorry Jack missed that little tidbit.

It sounds like your best bet is, as suggested before, to remove the HDD from the laptop and connect it to another system, either via SATA or SATA-to-USB. If you are going to buy a SATA to USB adapter, I would suggest getting a HDD dock like this:

This one supports both USB and eSATA. I have a Rosewill one, and it has really come in handy a few times.

Its the DC port on the laptop that is loose I've tested the connection at the end of the power brick, i just ordered the part today so i should have it in 2-3 days then ill be in BF3 with yall

It may be the solder failed and re-soldering it would fix it. Does the case come apart enough that you could access it to solder it back?

havent tried to open it yet lol. Looking online for descriptions of what to do
