USB device when plugged in preventing boot

    Anyone ever had this before?

First time i've ever seen it in my pc's life time...

I usually boot my pc and plug my phone in, but today...
I plugged my phone in (my mb allows passive charging when the pc is off),
pushed power button on pc, nothing.

i did the usual tech guy stuff....
    1. push power on rapidly like 20 times
    2. say 'thats weird'
    3. turn it off and back on
    4. repeat with a 10 sec delay saying 'this usually works'
    5. push power on rapidly like 20 times again
    6. say 'I'm stumped ah well'

so I removed my phone and it started up...

    Any ideas?
Power supply is not overloaded, running fine...
    matrix?

I'm not insane. I'm just overwhelming!

Did you try a different USB port?

My password protected portable Hard Drives do that. If I boot with them plugged in the machine won't boot.

Your BIOS may be set to boot to a removable device first, in which case the USB drive qualifies. If it is not set up as bootable (99.99% are not) then the PC won't go onto boot option #2.

Its rare, but I have seen it happen from time to time. Just change your boot order from removable first to the HD first.

Yeah, it's trying to find your OS on the USB device. Same thing happened when I had my ipod plugged in. Just have to change the boot order in bios.

Look in BIOS it is prob set to launch through the usb port first, and bc ur phone has operating system on it your computer is prob trying to launch that and well failing'

Are you saying it powers on but doesn't boot OR it doesn't even power on?

My laptop will do that if I have my Android plugged in to it via USB. I don't have a problem if my USB ext. WD500GB drive is plugged in. I just hadn't thought about it that much really.

Maybe I'll have to do some checking.

If it doesn't even power on then that's a much bigger problem. Same happened to me with my galaxy S (Turns on but won't get past BIOS checkup). It's so weird because you would think it's just sucking up those tiny 2 watts and not even bothering your mobo.

Its an anroid phone so maybe its saying stuff to the pc?
                  Dunno.
All i know atm is when its in any of the ports pc acts like it has no power.
Maybe its something with the mb and bios im thinking, because of the active charge thing.
I know pc was getting power else phone would not have been on charge.

Not a major issue just freaking weird thou...

                    Ok did more faffing around.

Appear it only does it when tthe phones batt is emptied.
I plug it in to charge and the phone goes into semi state.
Where it accepts a charge and still looks like its not charging, but warning me its low.
Ie led flashing, but phone not on.

If i try do this with phone on, or in solid orange led (charging)
                    It boots ok...

Really odd, must be something to do with the phone in that 1/2 alive mode.
Maybe talking to my pc or trying....

A while back, I had to reformat a guys pc that claimed his Nexus phone was causing the problem. I never figured out exactly what was happening, but the claim was that booting with the phone attached irreparably damaged the MBR. Whatever it was, his computer did require a full reformat... He managed to damage it the same way several times before I gave up on him.

If he knew that was the problem, why would he keep doing it?

Yeah, it happens to me when I leave a cd in the drive or something. So I have to remember to take it out or I get stumped every time until I realize I left a cd in there.

Well since you said it's acts like there is no power I can only assume it's drawing enough of the 12VDC to keep the machine from booting. Interesting!

Having tried many cases I've given up on expensive ones. Not convinced they are significantly better than an inexpensive gel case for 1/10 the money....
