AMD announces next-gen Radeon HD 7970 for $549, says it 'soundly beats' rivals -- Engadget

Bleh... GPU's keep getting better, but overall our games won't get better to use that until the next generation of consoles comes out.
Everything still looks great on my single stock GT460, even BF3.

Nvidia is releasing the 780 series and they will be 2X faster than a 580.

AMD is a sinking ship and their competitors are making better CPUs and GPUs. Anything that they make isn't better than their rivals in comparable generations.

The only way they can compete is on the price, and that's why you can get a good deal. If their stuff could compete then their prices would match Nvidia/Intel dollar-for-dollar.

I'll keep it in mind for my next card. My current all-AMD rig (Intel am hookers) will be going strong for a while though, so it might be a bit.

nVidia fanboys have said that for years, but ATI/AMD is still around and I think is stronger for their merger. Who knows what the future holds, but competition will keep it bright!

Bring on the new tech! Competition is good for all of us but the claim that it beat rivals is kind of silly seeing as we don't have the next gen Nvidia cards yet and if they keep looking to beat the current cards from their competitors they will always be behind.

It sure does. I'm glad that I can stay neutral on thing like this. I soon may be an AMD user if I get the laptop that I'm pricing out. The 6990m is way cheaper then the 580m for similar performance.

Man I used ATI card exclusively for years. But then Nvidia came out with a few I was interested in.This last round I went back to ATI and am glad I did. Seems Nvidia had some problems with a few cards. At least the one I was looking at. *cough* 570 *cough*.

HIS 6970 IceQ X Turbo has been running pretty good, and I didnt have the game issues that a lot had with BF3. And it clocks decent. Keeps me in the 50-60fps range easily on high settings. I tried Ultra but I couldnt really tell a difference in graphics that much. And it dropped the fps down to about 45-48. So it is what it is. A good utility card.

You cant hold that against him. His medication is running low and he's trying to conserve.

I'm really enjoying my 6970/6950 Crossfire/Eyefinity setup. I don't have a single complaint. These cards have handled everything I have tossed at them at the res and high/ultra settings.

I'm excited for new cards - either AMD or nV - because it shows 1) that computers are still progressing in graphics, and that 2) keeps both companies pushing for being better/faster/higher quality than their opponent.

Either nV or AMD have both had their up's and downs. Coincidentally, the last few cards I have had have been AMD (x2, current cards), AMD 5870 (5970?), nV 8800GTS, AMD X1900XTX, nV GF4, nV GF3, nV GF2, Voodoo 3, Voodoo 2. (going from current->old)

Though, I do find that everytime I go from AMD/ATI -> nV, I don't notice as much of a quality increase as I do a speed increase. I'd rather quality > quantity.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
