Need help picking a new headset

So those of you that were in TS the night I pulled my headset off my head and it split in 2 know that I am going to be in the market for a new headset. I am looking for input into what you guys are using.

My current one, which is held together by duct-tape, is a Plantronics one.

    My questions/concerns/preferences are:

    1. Have to be able to get it on Newegg. I have a credit account with them and can't spend any cash wildly until after the wedding at the end of april.

    2. I would like surround-style headphones, I do not like over-the-ear, clip-ons, or earbuds....

    3. Are surround headphones any good? I am talking about the ones that would plug into multiple speaker outputs on my soundcard for true 5.1 or 7.1 sound. My question is if they are worth it and actually good... I remeber one of the advance EAX settings for soundblaster cards in BF enhanced sound but ruined directional perception in game... I am more focused on the directional persecption of sound improving my ability to trak things in game, versus sounding 'cooler'.

    4. Has wireless technology improved enough to warrant going that route? Right now I get up from my PC a lot, and sometimes the headset wire is wrapped around my armrest, or being digested by a cat. I am wondering if there is a good wireless standard that does not have a lag or reduction in sound quality. The other question with wireless is battery life, battery types (rechargeable versus single-use). Wireless is not a deal breaker for me, so if you guys are using a good headset that is wireless then by all means speak up - I am just curious if there are any truly good wireless ones out there.

I have found plantronics headsets to be a bit flimsy.

What are you using for your sound card?

Unfortunately, the motherboard chipset... I have an Xfi Xtreme Gamer but it does not fit in the only free PCI slot between my 2 graphics cards. I have digital and optical audio out, plus the 7.1 out via the 4 stereo mini plugs (one jack each for the front, side, and rear speakers, plus one jack combining the center and subwoofer channels).

I have the g930 logitech wireless I'm happy with those. I can go upstairs to the fridge for a beer and still hear the chatter. I've had them over a year and still like them. Duke also has the g930 and Skud has the non wireless variant. The only problem I had is once my mike was open and I was washing my glasses in the sink. The running water made everyone think I was taking a leak

Suuururee you were doing the dishes.

If you have to shop at newegg the wireless ones are out of stock. Newegg.com - Logitech G930 USB Connector Circumaural Wireless Gaming Headset

Here are the wired ones that probably perform just as well. Newegg.com - Logitech G35 USB 2.0 Connector Surround Sound Headset

My cousin gave me the G35 when I gave him a couple old parts just under 6 months now. Very good headset except for the ear pieces wearing out. Basically the outer layer of the ear pieces is soft leathery material that gave out on me. He gave it to me in-box. So every time I finish playing, someone points out I have bits of black leather in my ear and questions me about Bondage.

IT would be vinyl and not leather (same in most cars just thicker)
How many hours have you played in the last 6 months? For you its got to be high. So he has to compare his cost vs time and get a ratio for replacement.
Are there replacements for the covers?

And good leather doesn't flake. Tell your friends to not be so cheap with their bondage.

I do play a lot. Even though, you wouldn't think it being stationary on my ear would wear out this quick.

There are no replacement parts. It's Logitech.

It would be because of heat, moisture, and everytime you speak it will move. Also everytime anything you do it will shift slightly.

Put a pair of theses over your headsets.

Got the wireless Plantronics 995. Wont ever go back to wired. Can get up, get beer, go to the bathroom, chase the wife around. Whatever I need to do, and they never shut off. Can hear you mullets and laugh even when I cant say anything.

                        Noise cancelling mic.

Battery lasts about 6 hours. Enough to be tired of playing. Recharges pretty fast.

If you ever use wireless it will set you free and you wont go back.

In that case you would be better off going with one of the USB headsets. The Logitech ones Duke linked are good I have heard. Sennheiser used to make a version of this headset that came with a detachable USB sound device:
                          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826106157

I guess they discontinued it. Too bad, because it is a great headset.

I had a USB headset a few years back and the audio quality was pretty bad... Have they improved that much?

                            ...chase the wife around.
This made me think that if I go the wireless route, you guys hearing me do the dishes would be the least I would have to worry about...

From my experience, USB is better than onboard, but not as good as good offboard like an X-Fi.

Another option would be to buy a USB X-Fi:
                              http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102032
Then you can get any good 3.5 mm headset like the one I posted above.
