    CPU Upgrade?

    Hey folks.

I'm considering upgrading my CPU. It's funney I'm super technical with network protocols and devices but, past a 486 CPU I've never bothered. So help! I'm wondering if I move to a quad core if it will get me some more time out of my current setup?

I have this MB and CPU.
EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 ATX Intel Motherboard
Newegg.com - EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache
    Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80570E8500

This Quad core has 6MB cache (260$)

    http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-Pro...6937776&sr=1-1

    This has 12MB (370$)

Is it worth it or am I pissing in the wind.

After looking at PassMark Software - CPU Benchmark Charts I think I'm going to go with the Q9505

I wouldn't bother if you are looking for gaming performance. Minis 2500k is far better for BF3 then his e6650 quad core was. So even with the quad core I think you would see minimal gain for the $$ and for just few $$ more you could toss together a nice sandy bridge system.

You can mess around with this chart to see if it's even worth it:

I think Tom's Hardware has something similar too. What kind of vid cards are you using?

I have to agree with Duke, for the $370 you were going to spend on a new proc, you can get an I5-2500K plus a decent mobo for a few bucks more.

I have this one and haven't taxed it's performance yet. I've started three virtual machines at the same time while other items were running and it didn't put the total up to 50%.

The cores run really good from what I can tell.

The Q9505 is only 260$ and has twice the benchmark performance of what I currently have. The other proc at 370$ has only a slight bump in performance and is not worth the price hike.. FYI my vid card is a Nvidia GTX480 so no bottle neck there. I realize in the long term I'd get more life out of a new MB and proc. However I'd have to Fu$% with pulling the MB and messing around and researching or I can spend 260 bucks and drop in a proc for twice the CPU performance.

The $260 option does look better, you'll definitely see a difference going to 4 cores.

The really sad part is those prices have gone up in the last 2 years............ 775 has been dead for a while.

Wow, you are really hanging onto that 775 for dear life, aren't you ?? The i5-2500 combined with any Z68 board will eat that Q9505 for lunch, plus the bigger concern is, if that eVGA 775 board fails on you, you are now stuck trying to find a suitable replacement when there are none to be found.

I have the eVGA 750 FTW still in service, but reading their forums for that line of boards finds a lot of them that have just quit working, either with failed SATA or USB ports or other odd general failures.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but it always hard to recommend upgrading a dead platform.

It may be twice CPU but I'm not sure how much you will see in BF3, I suppose if you could find a used CPU for cheaper it may be worth it. I would just suck it up and take 1/2 a day to toss together a x68 MB, you wouldn't regret it.

                      1/2 a day?
Two hours max. With most cases you can leave most everything else in place.
If you do go with a new MB and CPU you will need a new CPU Cooler also.

Ouch ! If you are lucky, you have a MicroCenter nearby and you can snag a combo deal on the 2500/Z68 for $220 TOTAL:

                          http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/...8#/16efa968/27

That's $10 less than Donzi's price for the CPU alone. Tis a good time to buy, a good time indeed.
