I think windows 8 is about convergence - tablet / pc /phone, all having a similar interface.
Don't knock it till ya try it. I know my android tablet doesn't have a start button, and i don't miss it a bit. But that *is* different than using my computer.
However, with launchy, I find that I never use the start button anyway. That is no exaggeration, I don't. I use launchy to start everything.
Exactly Harpy. I checked out the developer install of this thing in Sep and I didn't like it one bit.

Yeah, I sometimes wonder if every person who makes decisions is chosen to make the wrong ones. Who in Microsoft thought "Hmm, this iconic part of windows. This purely Microsoft innovation that has been here for more than a decade should be dropped and replaced." I don't care how good the replacement is going to be. I will always drag my mouse to the left and down to get to my start button. Screw you, dumb project managers that get the job by kissing up to the boss.
People complained about Microsoft putting a Windows Shell over MS DOS too.

Where do you put the Bayonet?
Chesty Puller (upon seeing a flamethrower for the first time)
I am all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Lets start with typewriters.
Frank Lloyd Wright
It's not just that. They just got it right! Why in the world would they want to change to a whole new interface and relearn what the customer base wants.

Patiently awaiting the arrival of the diehard Win XP fan who always shows up and thinks MS should just stop trying to fix perfection.

He's not coming. I had to upgrade from Win XP (DX9) to play BF3.
Win 9 seems to do mostly the same things for me as XP. It's just another OS. They added extra security (that's good), and the extra security requires extra effort (that's bad).
Win 9, huh ?? Wow, you really got in early on the MS beta builds !
Win Vista and 7 upped the security quite a bit, but what annoys me about both is the way MS hid so many of the formerly out in the open tools, preferring to dumb it down so that the average user wasn't bothered with all of the extra stuff.
Having to support a large Win XP base, it was easy to create a default profile and have each new user already set with a pre-defined desktop and all settings already in place. Win 7 took that away and we are still trying to figure out how to create a global profile that applies to new users that log in.
