This is indeed a sore subject with me right now as my Sony KDL-52W4100 just started showing a couple of oddly pixelated horizontal paired lines about four inches in length at the top and middle center and right side. I'm @#$%#^ pissed. Paid 1800.00 through amazon. TV had great reviews now three years later @#$%@# and tons of sh%tty reviews. Sigh. I mean heck I paid 600 bucks for a clapped out nissan pickup truck and that thing still runs to this day (I sold it though). So I can't really stand behind sony. I will ask one thing though. Are you sure you want to mount it above the mantle. Keep in mind this will force you to look up slightly for hours at a time and may cause neck strain.

Thanks for all the input, it has been helpful. I looked on Amazon and the 2011 models were on sale but they were all the higher end ones. Today I am in Richmond VA and I went to a nearby Sams club and I was able to see the differences between the sizes. I think a 55 to 60 would be sweet above the fireplace and a 27 to 32 for the bedroom. I also could easily tell the difference between the refresh rates and I don't think I would want a 60hz one.
My father has an account at our local Costco and I will be heading there to check them out. The thing I like about this option is that I can bring it back no questions asked for 30 days[img]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4373/35734799443_53cb20ef13_z.jpg[/img]

We thought of this and I don't think there will be any other option if we want a TV in that room. Not only will it will be too high but there will be a ton of heat too. I could try to talk the wife into putting it in a case to the right of the fireplace but it would throw off the whole floor plan she has selected. FYI do not buy a TV mount from a big box store. They are horrendously over priced. I've used two brackets from monoprice HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!. One was a mount that could slightly tilt up and down for my 32". Well made and only 20 $. The other was a one that had a ton of adjustments. It could tilt up and down, left and right. Also it was articulated so you could pull the whole TV away from the wall about a foot. Which made cable hookup easy. The wall base plate had a built in level too. Cost 35$. Although it was sturdy and robust the articulated bit did sag a tad but, hey the TV was 80 LBS. Not a big deal. Here's the unit I had on the 52"

Monoprice is awesome, though the last hdmi cable i ordered from them sucked. Ps3/tv kept doing a handshaking type thing where i would lose the screen for a couple seconds and it would come back. rinse and repeat. I love Samsung LED's. I would avoid Plasma, they run hot and have a limited lifespan. LCDs are OK but they run warm too. I had to change the power board out in one that fried some capacitors. LED FTW.

I saw a similar TV at Costco Madhatter. I like it but I need to keep the budget below $2000.00 for both the large TV and the 32" one for the bedroom.
Costco will be getting this one for $1399.00 today, if it looks good I will get it.

Again, don't worry too much about internet connectivity. You can run ethernet or wifi through a blu-ray player for the 32".
1080p is quite a bit easier, though there are fewer models with 1080p than there used to be. But...

Good news for me at least... It looks like my problem is a faulty T Con board. Stumbled across a few folks with the exact same issue. The fix is a new board. It's a samsung manufactured part....250 bucks. Still beats a totally wasted 52 inch tvComment

It's a sound bar that you place at the base of the TV. (or on top or behind). The one in the link has a subwoofer that acts like an amp and connects via HDMI. It can't really be 5.1 I think because all 4 surround speakers are located together. (hence the "virtual") But the reviews sound good.

I have a cheap set of KLH on pole stands. They take up very little room. The center channel is behind the set aimed at the wall. The KLH subwoofer was crap and I went and bought a separate Sony subwoffer which sits in the corner. Sounds pretty good to me....although I think I'd rather have those Klipsch's. They are all run through a seperate Sony amp via HDMI from the sources and regular speaker wire to the speakers.
Cable/Blueray >----HDMI----> amp >----Spkr wire----> speakers
