I have a $20 Logitech keyboard, never really looked into keyboards for gaming.
What the heck is displayed on the LCD that makes it so valuable?
There are a bunch of aps that you can get for the LCD. In bf2142 there was a screen that had your stats for that round. The ones I use now are RivaTuner for temps and fans speeds, Ventrilo information, Xfire information.
Out of game, I use an app called Sir Real's Multipurpose G15 plugin. It's highly configurable, and has a whole bunch of modules. In one screen, I have the date, time, live network traffic info, RAM and CPU usage meters (CPU has 3 lines; core 1, core 2, average), volume display with the ability to change between headset and speaker audio profiles by hitting the button under it, and an iTunes display with time remaining (pressing the soft button shows track info). In the remaining slot I have a module that appears when a program locks up. It displays the name of the frozen program, and holding the soft button under it for a couple of seconds closes the program instantly. Additionally, it has an option to inject media controls into iTunes. Anyone with a media keyboard has probably realized that the controls don't work if iTunes in minimized to the tray or start menu. With this plugin, they do.
