compared to the 8800GT, its only 83% as fast. now, while its not as fast, compare it to the 8600GT. the x600 series cards are more of the budget gamer's solution. always have been. and if the 9600gt is a pretty good comparision to the 8800gt, it makes you wonder exactly what kind of powerhouse the REST of the 9x00 series cards will bring.

The card is expected to be the first member of the GeForce 9 series and to feature 64 stream processors, a half a gig of RAM, and a 256-bit memory bus. the 8800gt has 112 stream processors. so this card, with a bit more than 1/2 the stream processors of the 8800GT performs at 83% of the speed is quite an decent feat. this card could prove to a VERY decent alternative for the price for the budget gamer.

the 9600 is the first of the 9x00 cards to be released. it's to replace there current midrange.
