    Macbook Air??

Just heard that Apple unveiled their new Macbook and it looks pretty nice. What's your thoughts on it and do you think that it would a be a good buy?

Looks nice, but no optical drive in it, so depends if you want to be able to use a CD/DVD without hauling a portable USB one around. And even though it has the ability to use another computer's optical drive if nearby, the times I'd use a laptop are when I don't have my desktop around, and I've been in situations where a colleague would burn information that I needed to a disc for me when all I had was my laptop with no possibility of desktop access for a week + and no good network available to transfer. Guess if you both had wireless it might work, but I've also had colleagues with only a wired interface.

All in all, I'd say it's very nice, but depending on usage, I'd stick to another laptop that has an optical drive in it.

Is the solid state HD faster than the 4200rpm ones?

Solid state HDDs are extremely fast and extemely expensive. I heard some kinda negative stuff about this thing. For one thing, it has an internal battery that cannot be removed/replaced. Also, it is extremely expensive.

it depends on more than that. the Random access times are faster, as are the seek times, but its still limited by the sata2 architecture. they say 3.0gbs/sec, but no one ever hits that, except in burst, and then its only close.

Actually my company sells a raid array with a solid state drive. they're incredibly expensive. What our customers use em for are specific files that get hit by a ton of users. Like database index files for ebay let say.

I agree with ya however my wife uses an old t21 ibm laptop for browsing while we're on the couch or when we sleep in on the weekends....It could be usefule for that.
