I just envisioned this conversation
Valve Brainstorming:
Guy #1: Our sales are down how can we increase our profit?
Guy #2: We can release another Counter Strike.
Guy #1: That's good, but I don't think people are going to buy the same game for a fourth time.
Guy #3: We can release a new console, and they can buy it as a launch title.
Guy #1: I like where this is going, but I'm still on the fence.
Guy #5: We can add land mines or remote C4.
Guy #1: That's brilliant OK guys get to work, Update the graphics a bit and we can go ahead with this
Guy #6: What about the Console?
Guy #1: We'll grab someones computer and slap Linux on it and call it a day. I'm looking for a 2 month time frame.
Guy #6: That's impossible how are we gonna fix the netcode and port the engine over and test everything?
Guy #1: Netcode? Is that some sort of promotional coupon?
Guy #6: No.. But what about Quality Assurance?
Guy #1: We fired all the QA people, all they did was play games all day. By the way how is Counter-Strike iPad Edition coming?
Cost is the biggest factor for this to succeed. It may be able to perform plenty of roles: HTPC, PVR, music streamer, but at the end of the day it needs to be no higher than $350* to appeal to a prospective buyer.
* - denotes my guess at its actual cost. Without knowing anything of its hardware config, that's the price point that I could expect for it to be comparable to other hardware configs that are roughly similar.
Oh if a man tried to take his time on Earth and prove before he died what one man's life could be worth, well I wonder what would happen to this world ? - Harry Chapin
Would you buy the consul and not use your computer?
Computers are way too much of a hobby to switch to console for gaming. But I am interested in the multimedia aspect of it. Early in year or maybe last year, they filed patents on controllers. So it seems they have been working on this. It would be neat to see their take on this would be. Maybe they have some hardware manufacturer on board to help them, might be something cool.
Old school or the new, doesn't mean a thing if your heart's not true...
