    Without my pc for a bit...

    My little bro, Stealth, has found a way to break my pc. He borrowed my vid card so he can test if his was broken after he replaced his motherboard. Mine works fine on his so he knows that his vid card is broken and needs a replacement. Puts it back into mine.... Now my pc doesn't work. We turn it on and nothing ever shows up on my screen, fiddled with it all day, nothing. Somehow there was no signal to my monitor so he couldn't tell if there was a problem. He takes both vid cards and uses them on his. Works fine... puts back into mine. same problem(now my pc never shows the booting up process with a HD cable for some reason but works fine when it gets to windows log in). I tell him to bring in his monitor... same problem. toss the hd cable out for now and use old school monitor cable(ew, right... I know but gotta make sacrifices to move on). Still nothing. After looking up similar problems online, we have come up with no answers. He thinks somehow he confused my motherboard and it may be broken now. Warranty was only for 2 years. Got it back in 2009. I'm sad. He says he will replace it, I'm still sad but not so much now.

    Here's where you pros come in...

    What did my smart but right now the dumbest guy alive break my pc and can he fix it without replacing it?

    Tell him to get a new MB and see if that helps.

      Try resetting the BIOS.

        Depending on the MB type, the builder versions often include a beep sequence or a light display that will tell you what kind of error is happening (without needing a monitor). The manual will explain this troubleshooting message. If no manual on your shelf, it should be available on-line.

        On the other hand, I like the whole idea of a new MB.

          He took out the CMOS battery for 15 minutes, hit the reset button and switch the CMOS jumper. Still have problem. He's taking care of the MB problem by replacing.

              Wait, let me get this straight. He just took your vid card and put it in his, then put it back in yours. Sounds like the card was damaged. Not the board. Did you try another vid card on your board to see if maybe your card got messed up. How can you mess up a mother board by changing vid cards, when that's what they are designed to do.

              Maybe I missed something.

                Yeah, we tried that with my other vid card and his. I am just as clueless as you about the situation. Somehow the MB got confused. I mean I did build this back in 2009 and we've come so far since then. I'm hoping he upgrades my vid from the 260s I have to maybe a 400+ series of even a 500+ series. :P

                  Did you pull everything apart and rebuild it? Preferably outside of the case? I've never heard of a motherboard to completely fail like this, ever.

                    Yeah we did.

                    Back up and running. New motherboard installed and everything. Got additional fans on the way too to help with cooling b/c my big one broke long ass time ago and some others broke when my vid card blew up. lol

                    I think I'll take it to a friend who works in IT and see if he can give it a thorough cleaning and see if the old fans are salvageable.

                      All you need is a can of compressed air and a soft brush. No need to take it anywhere.
