    Corrupted Disk Drives?

I believe both of my disk drives may have become corrupted.

I tried loading up several CDs/DVDs before I checked the drives on Device Manager. Sure enough, there an error warning on both of the drives. I get the following message:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I've tried updating the drivers and neither have an update. I've never dealt with corrupted disk drives before, so I figured I'd better come ask some of our IT guys before I make matters worse.

    Here are the drives:

    LITE-ON LTR-52327S (CD-rom)
    SONY DVD-ROM DDU1612

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. I hope I don't have to go buy a new set of drives.

Try connecting one drive at a time only. Try a different IDE cable. Optical drives don't need drivers iirc and i doubt a firmware update is going to fix this either.

    Did they die simultaneously?

edit: Ok, this in fact might be a XP screw up.

    Possible solution.

As far as I know. Both were working fine just yesterday, and neither seem functional now.

Again, forgive the ignorance, but... If I uninstall one or both of these drives, will I encounter any trouble reinstalling them? Or is Windows going to throw a hissy fit when I try to reinstall corrupted drives?

There is not installing or reinstalling per-say as XP automatically finds new hardware on boot. In fact i don't think you will need to touch them. I've just read quite a few help forums on this topic and all of them suggested the MS fix, and they all fixed the problem as seen here.

            You're the man, Juneau!

All it took was deleting one item in the registry. And, looking back... I know exactly what caused it, too. It was explaining how this error comes about, and they said it's caused by uninstalling certain CD/DVD recording software. I got fed up with Roxio's constant updates so I uninstalled it yesterday, which probably caused this problem.

            Thanks for the quick help!

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
