I want to be able record the over the air shows that aren't available. We currently use the interface on the TV or the DVD player and it's a PITA, I'm thinking that using this for amazon prime, Netflix might be easier.
Will you be using a server/nas of some sort to store all this media? 'Cuz that SSD aint gonna cut it.
Take a look at XBMC and Yatse for your playback needs.
An alternative to your htpc would be RaspberryPi. It's something I've been looking at myself.
I will be getting some NAS setup but I'm not sure of the details yet, I may try to use a case that could house a couple of drives as opposed to a separate box, for now I'll use a spare hdd I have.
Are you wanting to get rid of your satellite and just do OTA? If so, that should work well. Definitely need storage for an HTPC. Not sure you really need a NAS though, as it isn't really critical data. I would just get a big WD Green drive or two unless your case has limited space.
I just got an Amazon Fire HD. It is pretty sweet. Just using it with Amazon Prime and Netflix right now, though they seem to have most of the same movies.
I also have a Raspberry Pi. They work pretty well for streaming, but can't be used as a DVR replacement I don't think.
I hope to go with OA Amazon Prime and Netflix. I'm on the fence about the NAS at this point, it would be nice to have a place where my wife could put all of her pictures from various locations. At this point I will keep my eyes peeled for deals on a drive that will be needed for the DVR storage.
I'm still reading up on what programs will be best for recording, I'm sure I'll have more questions.
