Symantec - 'Anti Virus is dead'

It's not really a surprise. Systems are compromised differently than they were, and when was the last time you paid for your Anti Virus apps?

No, Norton is dead. If those anti-virus companies would make software that doesn't kill your CPU and RAM then more people would use them. I haven't used Anti-virus since 9 years ago. It started when I didn't have money for them. Then I decided it was not necessary if I knew how to use my computer and watch out for sites to visit... especially porn sites.

Now with Firefox + adblock + noscript, it's really dead.

          Good, yes. Good enough?

          A few additional risk vectors:
          * Flash memory sticks that get plugged into not-my-computer. For example, I have Office Max print for me occasionally. Plus, I handle minor PC issues for my mother-in-law.
          * A network shared with any other living person (because dead people never accidentally hit the wrong web sites)
          * A network shared with enabled devices that auto-cruise to web sites (this hasn't been a big problem yet, but the potential is real)
          * Ancient relatives who believe forwarded email is a blessing. If you have this problem, insist they get on Facebook with their own account. Then they won't have time to be lonely. Plus, I'm not on Facebook.

I found Eset nod32 to be the best. Built on assembly language, it does not hog system resources.

I use ESET, but it's doing a little worse in the independent tests each year.

I used to use ESET too. Switched to Avira's free offering a couple of years back.

What I found interesting about ESET was they were the ones who developed the virus definitions. Other anti-virus companies got them from ESET.

I don't know how true that is, but it would not surprise me.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
