This is for anybody considering a new hard drive.
Since manufacturers hide their data, and vendor sites are only good for avoiding "awful" products, this Backblaze report is very interesting. They caution not to trust it too much because they don't have a perfectly controlled situation. Yet, it's the only available data. Nobody can forecast future failure rates, but I wouldn't buy a Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (ST3000DM001), 3.0TB.

Summary:
- Hitachi Deskstars are the big reliability winners vs. Seagate & WD. They are also more expensive.
- The 3TB Western Digital Red seems to have a early failure problem.
- Last year, Deskstar manufacturing was sold to Toshiba (3.5") and WD (2.5"). I expect this to hurt their reliability at some point.
- All drives fail eventually.
