The only thing i can think of is that they've updated the casing. Will do some digging.

        1) Did you buy them all at the same time ??

        2) WHERE did you buy them from ??

        3) Nothing that a lil putty and sandpaper can't fix !!

Seriously, as long as they are the same capacity and specs, it shouldn't be an issue. Altho if you'd drop the RAID hangup you have .... *ahem* .. ohh, I won't go there .. sorry.

I bought the the first one a year ago, the second one in the summer and the latest one last week. They are all 250 GB 7200.10. I guess they just have a new format. I kind of wish they were all that thin for better cooling.

Companies update designs all the time. Occasionally they'll make a big hoopla about it, but often it'll just be a "soft launch", where they just quietly replace the current stock with new stuff over time.

From the looks of these drives and their relative sizes, it looks like they shrunk the updated circuitry or even possibly reduced the number of platters. Something had to change to reflect such a stark size change in size.

When I started in computers, this was state of the art.
IBM 3370 DASD. Each one of those cabinets could hold a blistering 571MB.

So that entire "string" of DASD (Direct Access Storage Device) held a humungus 2.2GB. 2 floppy disks.......

                A change of Pace.

imagine how much information you could hold if those were all 1TB HDDs.

Yeah I believe I read somewhere that seagate drives 320gig and down are going to single platter. Nice airflow between drives with the smaller height.

Kinda what I thought.....makes sense given the nearly halved height of the newer drive.

the size differences is probably due to perpendicular recording, and the # of platters. more and more hd's are getting thinner due to the platter count being reduced as the size of the data going on to the platter increases. proces beneficial. since the most data i have seen on a platter now is 250gb, it stands to makes sense that they are getting thinner. lol. i have 2 80gb harddrives. 1 is ful height, with 2 40gb platters, and a newer one with 1 80gb platters. the 80gb one is indeed alot thinner.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
