A new TV (plasma or lcd??) plz help

    Hey all,

My dad told me today that since I am welll to put it frank an electronics geek that he would like to get a new tv 42 - 48 inch high def TV. I told em I'd look for the best one, and naturally I started having questions.

So whats best now for the inches we can get. Plasma or LCD? We want a good one that will last a while, even if the price is higher.

Does anyone have one that they or content with? Or what is the best one listed on newegg right now..?

    Thanks!

DLPs are probably the best bang for the buck, but they are thicker than LCD and Plasma. I personally prefer LCD. They are cheaper than plasma, but you don't really lose much in the way of quality; the biggest benefit of plasma is you generally get better blacks. I have a 42" Toshiba 1080p (can't remember the model #, I've had it for ~ a year), and I really like it.
I would recommend doing a little research, reading reviews on different TVs, then actually going to a store and looking at the picture on various models. How good a picture looks can be a bit subjective. When I bought my TV there was another model that got good reviews but just didn't look good to me when I went and looked at it.

Keep in mind also that Plasma's have a shelf life that degrades over time.
in 5 years the Plasma will have lost some brightness and there tends to be a "sag" effect, where plasma gathers at the corners of the screen or in the middle channel, causing an odd color variance in the violet colors to occur

LCD's, your rate of risk is low for degredation, but the opportunity for a pixel to die is just as prevalent as the sag effect. I have a plasma, an LCD, and a new DLP, and I can tell your right now, the DLP kicks the tail out of all the options, but the Plasma is the best front viewed option when it comes to cinema.

None of this will help you make a decision. The idea is to find your tolerance levels in each category and pick something that you can tolerate for the next 5 years or more.

Keep in mind also, my DLP is only 19 inches deep at the widest part.

Play console games? No plasma for you. And the point about Plasma degredation is dead-on.

My 61 inch DLP is 10000:1

And.. if you ever rent those movies that are widescreen, (12 inch black blank space at the top and bottom of the screen) then one click of a button on the remote and BAMMM!!!! fullscreen with maybe a 1-2 inch blackie at the top and bottom with no width lost.

IMHO, the best you can get:

                        Bravia XBR

The picture is amazing and handles video games like no other.

If you have the bank go for the 52"

TRULY this is quality video. I just don't and haven't seen with my own two eyes the big difference. I had twenty thousand dollars in my pocket and the best picture I found for the price was the Samsung.

I bought my TV last fall and weighed the pro's and cons of each. Unless your really looking to hang your TV on a wall I 'd go with a DLP. Samsung and Sony make the best. I bought a 56" Samsung for $1800 and it's worth every penny! It only weighs 60lbs and the Best part is, it's main part is a "light Engine". If it goes bad, you can replace it for a couple of hundred bucks and your TV just became brand new again!

Did I mention the Picture quality is Awesome! Discovery HD is pure eye candy, as is any movie in HD. It's all I watch now.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
