I was planning on upgrading my network at some point to Gigabit speeds, and most of my boards support it, so I saw an ad at Office Depot offering a 5 port Netgear Gb switch for $20, so I headed in there early today and grabbed one.
When I got home, I hooked it up to replace a Cnet 10/100 switch that sat aside of my router. Thinking my work was done, I went to my main rig and checked to see if it was now listed as 1gb instead of 100 ... wellll, no .. it was set at 10mb !!!!!
WHAT ???? I then remembered that I had to shove and old 8 port hub under my desk when my wife's PC was moved to the room aside of where my PC is set up. The wireless adapter she was using didn't do SQUAT with a much longer range than where it previously was, so I has to do the 'ghetto cat5 run' across the baseboard to get her online.
I had forgotten about it completely, and with CoD4 I had been getting a nasty 5 second lag almost every map, which I assumed everybody else was getting .. but nooo, it was that piece of crap HUB !!!!
Anyhoo, I yanked the hub and replaced it with the just retired Cnet 10/100 and I am at least running on a 100mb switch at this point. I complained enough that the wife OK'd a cat5 drop for her PC so I can dispose of the switch soon, so that is good news. I was smart enough to run a spare line to my PC so the contractor can use that extra line to simplify the run as well.
So thats my tale of bad packets/dropped connex ... anybody in the southcentral PA area wanna poke some holes in my walls ??
